Dr. Erik Dent - Principle Investigator

ewdent@wisc.edu

Dr. Dent is an Assistant Professor in the Department of Anatomy at the University of Wisconsin-Madison.  Originally from Syracuse, NY, he received a B.A. with Highest Honors in Neuroscience from Colgate University.  After working for several years on a neuronal growth-associated protein, GAP-43, with Karina Meiri (SUNY-Syracuse), he went on to pursue graduate work with Katherine Kalil (UW-Madison) where he identified signaling proteins that regulate guidance and branching of nerve cell processes is the developing brain.

As a postdoctoral fellow with Frank Gertler in the Department of Biology at MIT, Dr. Dent uncovered key steps in the initial formation of nerve cell processes.  In recognition of his outstanding promise as a young leading scientist in cell biology, he received the 2003 Merton Bernfield Memorial Award from the American Society for Cell Biology.

In 2006, Dr. Dent returned to UW-Madison, where he is establishing a research program that continues to focus on understanding how the cytoskeleton and cytoskeletal-associated proteins interacts in response to guidance cues to sculpt the developing nervous system.  His approach utilizes genetic, molecular, biochemical and high resolution biophototonic techniques.

Dr. Dent’s research articles and reviews have appeared in leading journals, including Nature Cell Biology, and The Journal of Neuroscience.
